About GHCB
A number of dedicated
musicians formed The Greater Harrisburg Concert Band in 1983 in order
to pool the areas very best musicians into one high quality and
versatile performing ensemble. The Band grew out of the consolidation
of several pre-existing organizations, including the Moose Band and
the American Legion Band. These were two performing groups that had
provided decades of fine band music to concert-goers in the Harrisburg
area.
The Greater Harrisburg
Concert Band is currently comprised of approximately 50 professional
musicians, including many area music teachers and band directors. The
membership is augmented by the talents of young, accomplished high
school and college-age instrumentalists.
The Greater Harrisburg
Concert Band was formed to serve five main purposes. These purposes
are to provide the people of the greater Harrisburg area with an
outstanding concert band, to enhance the cultural possibilities of the
Harrisburg region by fulfilling both entertainment and educational
purposes alike, to preserve the tradition of American concert bands
and town bands in this region, to provide a professional concert band
for the many wind and percussion players in this area, and to provide
an opportunity for talented young musicians to perform at a
professional level.
